Salto Ángel
Known to the indigenous Pemón people as Kerepakupai Merú, Angel Falls is the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall — a 979-meter free fall from the summit of Auyán-tepui.
Getting There
The journey to Salto Ángel is itself an adventure. From the town of Canaima, motorized canoes navigate the Churún and Carrao rivers through dense jungle for approximately 4-5 hours upstream.
What to Expect
- Day 1: Fly to Canaima from Ciudad Bolívar. Explore Canaima Lagoon and its pink-sand beach.
- Day 2: Canoe journey upstream through rapids and jungle. Camp at Isla Ratón.
- Day 3: Early morning hike to the base of the falls. The mist at the base creates a perpetual rain shower — bring waterproof gear.
- Day 4: Return journey downstream (faster with the current).
Difficulty Notes
This trek involves river navigation, jungle hiking on uneven terrain, and exposure to weather. Moderate fitness level required. The trail to the base of the falls is steep and can be slippery.
Best Time to Visit
During the rainy season (June–December), the falls are at their most spectacular with maximum water flow. In the dry season, the water can thin to a mist before reaching the bottom.
